Who is niki schwan

My father, who is from Russia, wore gold chains. TH: Who are your mentors? Growing up in L. Being able to see and experience all the different cultures and ethnicities. TH: How did your career start? I looked a lot older and I was pretty much on my own by the time I was I was working full time and got a work study situation with my high school. Very quickly I was working for the corporate office and head of merchandising. By 16, I was traveling the country and got a chance to see how product is made and bought, creation and licensing and private label from the factories in downtown L.

That was my school. I was really able to understand each level of production, development and sales and merchandising. TH: How did you transition into styling? I was working as a stylist before it was even a career! It gave me my first access to Fashion Week, different designers and studios and behind-the-scenes exposure.

I started producing my own line, Lura Starr in , as I was styling. I was 19, knew the factories and knew pattern makers and sewers.

I also was working under Richard Tyler and Todd Oldham, so I felt like the best platform for me was to take the money I had and open a retail store. So I did, in By I opened a second store on Beverly, by the big guys. NS: That was a strong platform for me—pre-social media! I was getting tons of press and still able to style, but focused on styling my own product. Covers of Vogue. It was a magical time. And it was organic! I was young and being supported by these amazing women.

I closed my store in L. Set up shop in the Garment District. I went through my first financing deal. NS: When it went under and was rebought, I was styling more A-list celebrities than even musicians but I did have a strong foundation and network in the urban world. When they approached me in , they thought I was the perfect person to help rebuild the brand. TH: What exactly do you do as a fashion director? How does it differ from styling? TH: What are your favorite shoots?

And it was my brand on the cover! With VIBE , there are so many. Obviously the Nicki cover, which is how I met Nicki. I loved the ability to determine personal emails from virtually anyone on the web with RocketReach.

I was assigned a project recently that regarded public relations, partnership, and outreach responsibilities and RocketReach not only connected me to prospective individuals but allowed me to streamline my search approach on the basis of location, skill set, and keyword.

Prior to RocketReach, we would reach out to people through professional networking sites like Linkedln. But it was frustrating for us to have to wait for people to accept our connection requests if they accepted them at all and sending is too expensive.. With the shear number of contacts we've been able to find using RocketReach, the platform has probably saved us nearly five years' worth of waiting.

It's the best, most effective email search engine I've used yet, and I've tried a few. Both in the scope of the searches, and in the number of accurate emails found, I find it surpasses others. I also like the layout, which is easy on the eye, more attractive and efficient. The bottom line is that it has been a effective tool in my work, as a non-profit reaching out to leadership. Before RocketReach, the process of sourcing email addresses consisted of scouring the internet, asking mutual friends, or stalking on LinkedIn.

The most frustrating part was how time consuming this all was. Finding emails for contacts turned into a one-and-done instead of a week long process.

Looking up emails for a targeted outreach was manual and enormously time consuming. I think the other huge takeaway from all of this is the message behind sustainable fashion, and to inspire women to look beyond the trends and the unattainable designer labels. We literally proved to the world that you do not have to wear designer brands to be the Belle of the Ball. I loved that I could share that we chose a vintage dress, which I reworked.

I hope every young girl and grown women, too across the world knows she can go to her neighborhood thrift store and find something timeless, that flatters her unique beautiful body, and be "best dressed" in her own life! We all know Janina's powerful "strut" was a huge part of this moment.

So in the end, it's really as simple as finding something that's timeless, flatters your body, makes you feel special, beautiful, and even sexy. And then chin up, head high: Own all of that! What were some of the other options that you found at Western Costume Co. I have accessed Western Costume for many years, as a stylist and costume designer, but I have never had access to their private designer archives.

It was the single most epic library of clothing you could ever imagine! Please note that when I pass, I want my ashes sprinkled throughout the designer archives at Western Costume, haha. But seriously, Western is a highly organized massive costume house; it's THE costume house major movies and television shows access for product. It's literally a library of clothing filled with every type of product you can imagine, from every era, every style, and so on.

A true costume house is less about "fashion" and so much more about costuming, and curating a story, through clothing and style. Can you only imagine if those clothes could talk? When it comes to borrowing looks, what can stylists and designers take away from your experience?

I hope stylists as well as women in general know that styling is so much less about designer brands, and current trends or runway head-to-toe looks and so much more about empowering the client: Finding something that is unique, and styled and tailored to them. Give the client or yourself the tools to feel confident, and own it. You are familiar with my good ol' hashtag InPursuitOfSexy — I am always saying sexy is so much less about what you are wearing and has everything to do with how you feel.

We are SO curious but also know you don't want to talk trash — can you give us any clues on who missed out on dressing Janina?
