Prior to his exit from the contest, Fitzpatrick had completed three of six passes for 13 yards. Though the assignment hasn't been officially confirmed by the team, this is an expected outcome, considering the way things have played out during the preseason.

Fitzpatrick is one of many starters who won't play in Saturday's preseason game against the Ravens, Nicki Jhabvala of The Washington Post reports. Coach Ron Rivera called the QB spot a competition between Fitzpatrick and Heinicke earlier this summer, but it hasn't had the look of a real job battle so far, with Fitzpatrick starting the first two preseason games while Heinicke worked almost exclusively with the second-string offense.

Fitzpatrick likely will get the start Week 1 against the Chargers. Fitzpatrick completed seven of his 13 pass attempts for 96 yards and no touchdowns or interceptions in Friday's preseason game against the Bengals. Fitzpatrick led four offensive series for Washington, though that resulted in only three points.

However, he did connect with some of his top receivers for big gains, highlighted by a yard completion to Logan Thomas and a yard gain on a deep pass to Dyami Brown. Though Fitzpatrick has not been formally named the starter in Washington to begin the season, he has started both of the team's preseason games to this point and is presumably locked into the role.

Fitzpatrick completed five of eight passes for 58 yards without a touchdown or interception in Thursday's preseason loss to the Patriots. Fitzpatrick's two drives ended with a punt and a missed field goal.

He remains a step ahead of Taylor Heinicke -- who completed nine of 15 passes for 86 yards -- in the competition for Washington's starting quarterback job heading into Week 2 of preseason against the Bengals. Expect Fitzpatrick to start that game as well. Rivera also mentioned Kyle Allen, who is working his way back from a severe ankle injury.

Neither Allen nor Heinicke seems especially likely to stand out this summer, but Rivera did make it clear Fitzpatrick won't be handed a starting job. While the year-old took most of the first-team reps Wednesday, per Ben Standig of the Athletic, it sounds like Heinicke will also get some work with the starters during training camp.

Fitzpatrick said he's already built chemistry with his pass catchers and expects to spread the ball around this season, NBC Sports Washington reports. Terry McLaurin will be the focal point of the passing game, but he should have more help around him this year after Washington acquired Curtis Samuel, Adam Humphries and third-round pick Dyami Brown in the offseason. On the other hand, Fitzpatrick was the only significant addition at quarterback, joining holdovers Taylor Heinicke, Kyle Allen leg and Steven Montez.

Given those alternatives, the year-old Fitzpatrick should have some margin for error in the starting role, especially early in the season while he's still getting the hang of a new system under offensive coordinator Scott Turner.
